Diabetes Meters

There are many different types of diabetes meters available today. Technology has come a long way, improving devices with more accurate readings, and better overall user experience. A very important consideration of any meter is whether your health insurance will cover the cost. Some of the more important characteristics of diabetes meters include:

*Price of meter and strips - the meter may be free or cheap, but what do the testing strips cost? This can be a very important determination of what meter you should use. Testing strips can run up to $1 per strip. This can get very costly if you are testing your blood several times a day,

*Blood sample size - the smaller the size needed to test, the less blood you need to supply.

*Results memory - how many readings will your device store? Can you flag the readings, i.e. before eating, after exerise, etc.

*Reaction time - how long does it take for the reading to register?

*Reliability - how accurate are the readings?

*Alternative site- can you take readings from other areas beside your finger with the same accuracy

*Computer download - download your blood sugar results to your computer and track them

*Ipod download - new technology allows you to download results to your ipod
